Norman M. Klein

Norman Klein is a cultural critic, urban historian and novelist. In his classic study, "The History of Forgetting: Los Angeles and the Erasure of Memory." His "anti-tours" of Los Angeles have been discussed often in various histories of the city, and in the LA times. Among Klein's other books: "The Vatican to Vegas: The History of Special Effects;" the award-winning database novel, "Bleeding Through: Layers of Los Angeles, 1920-86; and recently, "Freud in Coney Island, and Other Tales." Currently, he is at work on a vast science-fiction database novel, "The Imaginary Twentieth Century," to open in the Fall of 2007. His work has been exhibited in dozens of media festivals and competitions in the US, Europe, Japan, at the Seoul Biennial, at Transmediale in Berlin, at ZKM in Karlsruhe, in a career retrospective at the Beall Center (UC Irvine). He teaches in the Critical Studies Department and in the Center for Integrated Media at the California Institute for the Arts.
